Magician Dynamo can comfortably claim to have been the only Londoner ever to have levitated above the River Thames in front of the Palace of Westminster, or next to a double-decker bus. Currently enjoying its final series on Watch, his television programme Magician Impossible follows his journeys across the globe. We caught up with him a little closer to home to discover his favourite places in the capital.
Favourite neighbourhood:
My favourite neighbourhood has got to be Hampstead. It’s like something out of Sherlock Holmes and I’m a new resident there now, so I’m looking forward to getting to know the area even better.
Favourite place for brunch:
It has to be my friend Ben’s café called Boyden’s Kitchen in Friern Barnet, which I believe was also recommended by Grazia magazine recently so feel I am in good company there! They do great food, especially the amazing eggs benedict. Although, I have to say the bacon buttie is my favourite.
Best coffee in London:
I don’t drink coffee but I hear Starbucks is pretty good!
Favourite gallery or museum:
I love galleries but my favourite museum in London is the Museum of Magic at the Magic Circle headquarters in Euston. They’ve actually got the trainers I wore on the River Thames walk on display there right now so go and take a look!
Favourite building:
It has to be the Shard. As I’m sure you know the Shard is the highest building in Europe and I recently got a very unique view when I levitated above it.
Favourite place to shop:
That has to be Dover Street Market. It always has those cool items that you just can’t find anywhere else. I also love Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges as they have everything under one roof, which makes life easier.
Favourite place to find inspiration:
For me it has to be Covent Garden. There are so many amazing street performers down there that when you go and watch the shows you can’t help but be inspired, as well as by all the theatre shows that surround the piazza.
Best London destination for a date:
For me it’s Asia de Cuba restaurant at St Martin’s Lane Hotel. The hotel is beautiful and it is where I spent my first Valentines Day with my wife, so it’s always going to be a romantic destination for me.
Favourite park:
It has to be Hyde Park. I love taking my dog Bessie there and she loves it, although she always goes in the water, which she’s not supposed to, and so she always gets me in trouble.
Favourite food market:
Harrods Food Hall!
Your sanctuary in the city:
It has to be the spa at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. I’ve been going there quite a lot lately and it’s like another world – so chilled and relaxing.
What inspires you?
Life inspires me and everything that comes with it. Every single day I’m inspired by different things. I’m lucky enough to perform all over the world and meet so many inspirational people along the way. If you open your eyes and look up at the world around you there is always inspiration there, it’s just sometimes we’re all too busy to see it.
This season I’m loving:
This season I am loving Tim Coppens. Also Christian Dior never fails to disappoint, and although they are hard to come by, I love the Chanel trainers.
