Harry Gordon Selfridge was the founder of one of the greatest department stores in the world, Selfridges. We have recently been let into the secrets and beginnings of the store ‘Selfridge & CO’, which opened its doors to the public in March 1909, through the eponymous TV series from ITV. Selfridges acted as a haven for women in a time when they would be chaperoned and have little freedom – Harry Selfridge’s idea was to help liberate women by allowing them to escape and socialise in a safe place.  This ethos soon allowed Selfridges to become the leading department store of London. To this day the store remains a huge icon in the capital and has expanded its shops to other cities such as Manchester and Birmingham, now enjoyed by both men and women.
