Parisian fashion house Maison Alaïa has opened its first flagship store in London on Bond Street.
The store was designed by designer and founder Azzedine Alaïa, who passed away last November and will showcase Alaïa’s collections including ready-to-wear, shoes, bags and accessories. Limited-edition pieces and couture will also be available by appointment.
Friend Carla Sozzani, who collaborated with Azzedine on the interiors said “Azzedine loved London… and he came to this space many times. The last time we were here was only in October – and this is exactly the way he wanted it: super light, transparent, and easy to move around in… The fact that he’s not physically here is strange but in a sense he’s still here because he worked on these plans.”
The 6,000 square foot space combines contemporary future-proof design combined with the building’s original historic features to showcase the collections and a range of artworks from international artists and designers.
Sozzani added that nobody considered cancelling the plans to open the store after the designer’s passing – “The people who worked with him at the maison — they still work there. No one has left. Everyone is super motivated and they loved working with him. They want to continue his work.”
The building will also stage a series of fashion design exhibitions and the Maison Alaïa brand has plans to sponsor scholarships for promising young talent in the coming months and years.
