We caught up with Robert for the latest in our ‘My London’ series.
East London, I love the diverse mix of culture we have here.
Favourite place for brunch:
Red Arts Cafe, Kingsland Road. I am a huge fan of brunch. I never feel hungry before this time, but when I’m ready, I tend to go large, so the Turkish dish Menemen is the way forward and Red Arts Cafe is the very best place in my opinion to take it.
Best coffee in London:
De Beauvoir Deli. I love this place for instant relaxation, it’s a place I like to go and have some thinking time.
Favourite gallery or museum:
Tate – I’m sure I am not alone in saying it is a HUGE inspiration to me. The curation is exceptional – the vastness of the space and architecture is also stunning. The world would be a far duller place without the TATE.
Tell us a secret:
My childhood dream was to be a biologist. I have always been bowled over by science and nature, there are always elements of nature in all my collections.
Favourite place to shop:
Online, I really don’t have time for shopping trips. I am a self confessed workaholic and rarely leave my studio. If I shop, it’s online and invariably COS. My style is extremely simple, black and neutral.
Favourite place to find inspiration:
Cinema, galleries, or travel. My most recent trip to Peru, inspired my SS18 collection. The landscape and laid back culture really helped me relax. It’s crazy what results you get from simply allowing yourself a little space and time to actually think.
Best London destination for a date:
London Curve Garden in Dalston, such a beautiful and romantic slice of London. Always something going on, a great place to catch up with each other surrounded by luscious and green space.
Victoria Park, there are few open green spaces in East London. Victoria Park is great because you can actually get a proper walk in.
Favourite food market:
Ridley Road Market on Saturday. Full of the very best of everything – so many amazing small independent stalls. I always find something exciting and new.
Your sanctuary in the city:
My studio. Its where all the magic happens. Where ideas become reality. Its a safe and happy place for me.
What inspires you?
Movie Directors – the way their crazy internal ideas are projected out into films that pull you in so effortlessly. I was lucky enough to work with Hunger Games creating costume – what a movie! National Geographic – its my bible. Nature is such an important outlet for me.
This season I’m loving:
Layering – I use a lot in my collections. I like how just removing one piece of layering can entirely transform your look and take you day to night.
