My London: Martyn Roberts – MD of Graduate Fashion Week

Martyn Roberts founded Fashion Scout in 2006, following a successful career in Fashion PR in London. Over the past 12 years he has developed Fashion Scout into the internationally acclaimed platform for fashion designers including showing Iris Van Herpen, Gareth Pugh, David Koma, Peter Pilotto, Eudon Choi, Osman, Angel Chen, Anna K, Rocky Star, and many more.

Fashion Scout is held during London Fashion Week and features 30 catwalk shows and presentations in the esteemed Freemasons’ Hall. Martyn also launched Fashion Scout platforms in Paris and Kiev, successfully raising the international profile of emerging design talents and helping them build sustainable businesses. More recently he launched Fashion Scout SEE (South East Europe) is a unique partnership between four of the region’s fashion weeks and Fashion Scout

In 2012 Martyn was appointed Managing and Creative Director of Graduate Fashion Week. Featuring graduates from 90 universities from across the globe GFW is the world’s largest event for fashion graduates and attracts 30,000 guests to its annual event. During his tenure, GFW has won the patronage of Dame Vivienne Westwood, Victoria Beckham, Christopher Bailey, Diane von Furstenberg and Nick Knight, signed LVMH, Givenchy, Ralph Lauren and many others as sponsors and has helped thousands of graduates secure jobs in the industry.

Martyn is also a regular attendee of international fashion weeks and a member of numerous judging panels, including the International Fashion Showcase at London Fashion Week. In 2016 the International Woolmark Prize awarded Fashion Scout the esteemed status as an Official Nominating Body for 37 countries including Armenia.

We caught up with Martyn for the latest in our ‘My London’ interview series.

 

Favourite neighbourhood:

Deptford, as there are always exciting new bars and pop up restaurants every time you visit.

 

Favourite place for brunch:

Brockley Market on the weekend is a great place to wander and pick up brunch of your choice. They have a great outdoor seating area too, so you can spend all morning there till 2pm.

 

Best coffee in London:

Nude Espresso on Hanbury Street in Shoreditch. I always get my morning coffee there when we are on site and running events at The Truman Brewery.

 

Favourite gallery or museum:

I regularly visit Tate Modern for the new exhibitions and fresh inspiration. It’s perfect for a weekend trip with the family or a personal trip for work.

 

Favourite place to shop:

Dover Street Market! I shop there when I can!

 

Favourite place to find inspiration:

Graduate Fashion Week annually takes place the first weekend in June and I am always amazed by the amount of incredible talent on show. It is truly inspirational.

 

Best London destination for a date:

Brixton Market is a fun alternative to a sit down dinner.

 

Favourite park:

Dulwich Park is a short walk from Dulwich Village and a great place to stretch your legs.

 

Favourite food market:

Brockley Market, especially Mother Flipper Burgers.

 

Your sanctuary in the city:

Postman’s Park – Behind St Barts in the city. It has wonderful memorials for Heroic Self Sacrifice and the stories are very inspiring.

 

What inspires you?

New graduate talent and their get up and go mantra of working hard to get where you want to be!

 

This season I’m loving:

Designer Aurelie Fontan who specialised in sustainability and technically paper free design. She was a multi-award winner at GFW in 2018 and has gone on to show at London Fashion Week and other international platforms. She’s one to watch!
