We caught up with James for the latest in our ‘My London’ interview series.
They say home is where the heart is. So for me, I have soft spot for my where I grew up, which is Hampstead. I live in Kensal Green now but my wife and I still like to take our two year old Poppy for walks on the Heath and have lunch at Kenwood House where we got married. I also love walking the streets around there. It can feel like you’ve been transported back in time.
Favourite place for brunch
My favourite place for brunch is Graceland’s in Kensal Rise. It’s a family run café that does yummy home cooked food.
Best coffee in London:
Favourite gallery or museum:
My favourite gallery is the Saatchi Gallery in Duke of York Square. It usually has some really quirky installations like Richard Wilsons Oil Room. It’s a room flooded with oil which is completely still and gives a stunning reflective optical allusion.
Tell us a secret:
Don’t tell anyone but when I was preparing for Kate’s wedding day hair. I bought a £10 tiara and I practiced on my friends and family.
Favourite place to shop:
I love to shop in Liberty’s. They have such an eclectic mix of products. From my favourite Oliver Spencer shirt’s to Moroccan lanterns. It’s a real treasure trove.
Favourite place to find inspiration:
From a hair point of view. I find inspiration from walking around the East End. You can always see some really cool haircuts and outfits too.
Best London destination for a date:
On a Summer’s evening I love sitting on the roof for dinner and drinks at the Boundary in Shoreditch. They have a small menu of char grilled steaks and fish. They also have citrus trees growing. On a warm evening it can feel like you’re sat in the Mediterranean. They also have an outdoor fireplace and blankets. So it’s pretty romantic.
Your sanctuary in the city:
I love Hampstead Heath. If I feel like I need to escape the rat race this is where I head. It’s much wilder than any of the other London Parks and you don’t feel like your in the city. I like to cycle through it and have a swim in the lake’s. There a diving board too so no need to touch the bottom. It’s a great place to have a picnic too and has amazing views over London.
Favourite food market:
The food market under the West Way in Portobello market is pretty good. I can walk along the canal from house to it. They also have live music on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon and have a well stocked bar too. It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon.
This season I’m loving:
It’s been weird seeing the return of the 90’s. I first started going out raving in the mid nineties and was wearing all the clobber that went along with it. So I finally get to say to people in a slightly smug way “I was there the first time round”. I have embraced some elements though . I couldn’t resist getting a pair of Reebok Classics and have chopped my Barnet in to a really short French crop.
James can be found at the new Larry King Salon in South Kensington.
