My London: Emma Parker – Founder of Playful Promises

Interviews | | Leave a Comment

Emma Parker is the founder of the award winning lingerie brand Playful Promises. She started the brand as she could see that there was a gap for lingerie and swimwear that was flirty and risqué but also available in a wider range of sizing than most designer lingerie brands offer. She has lived in Spain and Japan but has always thought one of the best things about leaving London was coming home afterwards. She studied at the London College of Fashion.

We caught up with Emma for the latest in our ‘My London’ series.

Favourite neighbourhood:

I have lived in North, West, East and South London. I’ve found that wherever I live tends to be my favourite place at that time as I fully engage in the area around my home. I currently love Herne Hill and Brixton as that is where I call home these days.

Favourite place for brunch:

I love a bottomless brunch on a Saturday so rather than have a favourite I tend to go where there is a fizz to be had. Sake No Hana and Quagalinos both do pretty good brunch offers.

Best coffee in London:

I am one of those strange people that doesn’t drink caffeine so instead my best place for a cocktail in London is Mr Foggs. I love all the vintage bric-a-brac and the Spicy Rupee is one of my all time favourites as I love a cocktail with a subtle chilli kick.

Favourite gallery or museum:

I love the V&A. Particularly the Japanese collection.

Tell us a secret:

I studied Law at Uni and spent 10 years working in various London strip clubs before finding my vocation in life.

Favourite place to shop:

I am a bit of an online shopper as most of my favourite dresses come from Australian brands but if I wanted to find something unique I would head over to Brick Lane/Spitalfields on a Sunday.

Favourite place to find inspiration:

Anywhere and everywhere. London is like a Mary Poppin’s bags of inspiration. Clubs like Torture Garden where people let their imagination run wild often inspire me to go outside my boundaries in the creative process.

Best London destination for a date:

Salon in Brixton. OMG. It is so good. They do a set menu. There is no choice. You have what they are cooking but the food they serve up is unusual and delicious. They also do a good wine pairing with it which I always find thoughtful and unusual.

Favourite park:

Brockwell Park as it is near where I live so I use it often. It also has a Lido that is still open for those rare sunny days.

Favourite food market:

Herne Hill. So many cakes and cheese… and bread from the market stall ‘Superseeded’ is the best!

Your sanctuary in the city:

What inspires you?

The people close to me.

This season I’m loving:

Zimmermann’s frills. Frills done in a sexy but feminine way.
