10. Carolyn Crocodile Handbag by Marc Jacobs: £20.2k/$30k

This bag is made from quilted, purple crocodile skin and is – if you can believe – one of the designer’s most popular bags.

9. Selleria Bag by Fendi: $25.5k/$38k

Fendi’s Selleria bag can be made to order with sable and chinchilla: two of the world’s rarest and most luxurious animal skins.

8. Alligator Day Luxe Tote by The Row: £26.2k/$39k

This bag was originally stocked by New York department store Barneys, but the price tag was so high that it exceeded the maximum price for shipping to the UK. If you thought that the glazed alligator skin and leather-lined interior were worth it though, you could always charter a jet to pick it up from Manhattan…

7. Tribute Patchwork Bag by Louis Vuitton: £28.3k/$42k

Louis Vuitton only made 24 of their Tribute Patchwork bag, and so if you’re lucky enough to own one – we’re looking at you Beyoncé! – it’s like owning a piece of fashion history. The bags were created by fusing segments of 15 different Louis Vuitton bags into one patchwork shopper.

6. Precious Rose by Judith Leiber: £62k/$92k

This evening bag may be small, but it’s encrusted with 1,016 diamonds (totalling 42.56 carats), 1,169 pink sapphires and 800 tourmalines, all of which are set in 18-carat white gold. It’s also the only one in the world, which helps to explain the £62k/$92k price tag.

5. Urban Satchel by Louis Vuitton: £102k/$150k

The Urban Satchel is made out of derelict items such as water bottles, cigarette packets and chewing gum wrappers. Well, they do say that one woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure!

4. Cleopatra Bag by Lana Marks: £168.5k/$250k

Lana Marks only makes one Cleopatra bag every year; each made using a different skin, different colours and different design features, meaning that each bag is entirely unique. Worn by the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren, this bag is a red carpet favourite.

3. Himalayan Crocodile Birkin by Hermès: £291k/$432k

One of the rarest and most spectacular Birkins to ever be made, this bag went on the luxury resale market last year and was purchased for a whopping £291k/$432k. It is made of Nilo crocodile, and the ombré dying process of the skin takes many hours to complete. It also features diamond studded, 18-carat white gold hardware.

2. Birkin by Ginza Tanaka for Hermès: £1.3m/$1.9m

Iconic Japanese designer Ginza Tanaka made the body of this Birkin bag entirely out of platinum. It was then adorned with 2,000 diamonds plus an 8-carat pear-shaped diamond. The removable strap and central diamond can also be used as a bracelet or necklace, so perhaps we could justify the price by telling ourselves that it’s 3 items for the price of 1…

1. The “1001 Nights Diamond Purse” by House of Mouawad: £2.5m/$3.8m

The Guinness Book of World Records certifies this bag as the world’s most expensive handbag. This one-of-a-kind piece is the masterwork of 10 professional artisans who put in 8,800 hours to create it. The heart-shaped purse is fashioned from 18-carat, hammered gold, with precious stones set into its surface. That’s 56 pink diamonds, 105 yellow diamonds and 4,356 colourless diamonds, to be precise.
