UGG Australia is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and there has never been a better time to get to know the brand a little better. Though many will recognize the label’s now-ubiquitous sheepskin boots, but there is so much more history to UGG than you might expect.
UGG was founded in Southern California in 1978 by a man called Brian Smith. “Southern California?” we hear you cry, but its true. The boots became a sell-out sensation on the Cali beaches and were soon popping up everywhere from San Diego to Santa Cruz, and were just as popular in summer as in the ski season in the winter.
UGG’s popularity grew exponentially in the ‘90s, sported by celebrities and eventually featured in Oprah’s Favourite Things in 2000. Soon the craze was spreading to fashion capital New York and the brand’s styles, expanded beyond the signature boot, made it into Vogue magazine and other iconic glossies.
The brand is meticulous about its use of top quality materials, from plush sheepskin to burnished, oiled suede, washed canvas and tumbled distressed leather. UGG uses only luxuriously soft Grade-A Twinface sheepskin, putting it through an extensive process to ensure it will provide the signature UGG experience. “We look for uniformity and a flawless, fine-grained texture with no visible defects,” says the brand. No wonder the boots are so irresistibly co No wonder the boots are so irresistibly cozy.
As part of the brand’s birthday celebrations, it has partnered with key fashion industry influencers to discuss their love of the UGG brand, from model and rock goddess Karen Elson, to blogger and fashion editor Natalie Hartley and stylist and DJ Bip Ling. “I traipse around Nashville in the UGG Classic boot all the time,” describes Elson, while Hartley says, “I am all about comfortable, laid-back chic – which is exactly why I love UGG.”
