“A total celebration of the greatness of fashion and sportswear, ” is how Topshop’s creative director Kate Phelan aptly describes the brand’s collaboration with Adidas Originals, a collection that launches today.
Topshop’s team has taken 20 cult pieces synonymous with Adidas Originals and reworked the cuts and shapes to make them unique – there’s a zip-front track top, a sweatshirt, trainers, drawstring shorts and a tank. Inspired by the streets and landmarks of London, Topshop has put its stamp on each design with collaged, almost graffiti-like prints, what Phelan calls the “handwriting” of the collection. Many also feature the famous Trefoil logo, which was used by Adidas until 1997 when it was decided to reserve it just for heritage styles.
“We wanted to keep that cool sportswear feel,” Phelan explained, “to bring some femininity to the range and make the collection fit with all your fashion staples; the beauty is in how you combine it together.” Every piece has been designed with both performance and fashion in mind, but we’re imagining that few are unlikely to reserve them for trips to the gym or yoga class.
