The black Asprey bag that former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher owned for 30 years sold for £25,000 at a Christies auction yesterday. The iconic bag was used by Thatcher to carry state papers and important documents throughout the 1980s.

The bag, donated by Lady Thatcher herself, was bought by an anonymous bidder who is thought to have been a student in London during her time at Downing Street.

Director at Christie’s, Matthew Paton, likened the bag to Winston Churchill’s cigar, because of its iconic status in British politics. Proceeds from the auction will got to three charities Combat Stress, The British Forces Foundation and Debra.
