Set to his first major hit, “Your Song’, the advert starts in the present day with Sir Elton sitting at his piano at home, and travels back through time to the moment when he is gifted a piano for Christmas by his mother and grandmother.
The younger versions of Elton are played by several different actors, with costumes designed to be replicas of original outfits.
The changing scenes are accompanied by different recordings of the track sung by Elton throughout his career, subtly changing the mood with each scene transition.
Elton John said: “It’s been a lovely opportunity for me to reflect on my life in music and the incredible journey I have been on, and how first playing my Grandmother’s piano marks the moment when music came into my life. The ad is absolutely fantastic and I’ve truly loved every minute of being a part of it.”
Shoppers will have the opportunity to step into the sets used for filming the advert in John Lewis’s flagship Oxford Street store. As well as exploring the recording studio, living room, and dressing room seen in the ad, they’ll be able to try on some of the costumes used in filming.
Musical lightshows set to the musical backdrop of Elton John’s “Step Into Christmas” will also be projected from the shop’s windows every 30 minutes from 4pm on 15 November to mark the official launch of the advert, which will debut on ITV1 at 9.15pm during Dark Heart.
