Jane Birkin asks Hermès to rename ‘Birkin’ bag

British model and style icon Jane Birkin has rejected the use of her name for one of the most iconic bags in the world – the Hermès Birkin bag – after reports of cruel treatment towards the crocodiles whose skin is used to make them.

A report from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals revealed that the animals were being “crudely hacked” to death on farms in Texas and Zimbabwe, with two or three crocodiles used to make each of the luxury bags.

Birkin has since signed a petition, started by Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix, to protest the use of reptile skins in fashion, adding: “I have asked Hermès Group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag.”
