What with the blissfully warm and sunny weather we’ve been having, ice cream vans are hardly an unusual sight on the city streets this Summer. Very soon, however, you might just see someone unexpected at the wheel – to be more specific, fashion designer Henry Holland.
Holland plans to tour the capital in his ‘Mr Quiffy’ van, a brightly patterned and painted vehicle found on Gumtree and soon to kick off its journey in Covent Garden, with his ice cream-inspired summer collection in the boot. Shoppers that happen upon the van can expect everything from iPhone covers to the brand’s signature slogan T-shirts, all illustrated by stickers that will decorate the windows. The back of the van will double as a mirror for people who want to try things on and prices will range from purse-friendly £15 to £150.
This isn’t just a fun frivolous exercise however, Holland told the Evening Standard that it’s a way for his brand so suss out where would be the best place for the house to open a store in the future. “Opening a store is a huge gamble and a massive investment — this way we can gauge whether it might be worth it,” he told fashion editor Karen Dacre.
You will find House of Holland’s Mr Quiffy van in Covent Garden on Thursday and Friday; Carnaby Street on Aug 8-10; Seven Dials from Aug 15-17; and Spitalfields from Aug 29-30. Head over to houseof holland.co.uk for more information.
