My London: Nina Leykind – Founder of Eyeko

Interviews | | Leave a Comment

Nina Leykind founded Eyeko with partner Max in 1999, and has since established the brand as the ultimate go-to for all things eyes. The latest addition to the brand’s collection is the Visual Eyes waterproof, precision-tip liquid liner in three classic shades – Ebony, Mocha and Marine. We caught up with Nina to find out more about working with Alexa Chung, her beauty icons and what she loves about London.

What inspired you to create Eyeko?

I’m all about mascara and found that my frustrations were those of many women.  You know how as soon as you buy mascara it starts to dry out and you find yourself scraping round the barrel trying to get that last bit out? Well, that was a big driver for me to create my own mascara and ensure that we have the best formulas that are conditioning, lash friendly and help your lashes grow – that’s been my mascara mission! Focusing on eyes with the brand means that you know you can come to Eyeko for the best in eye makeup because that’s all we do – we’re obsessed with eyes!

Tell us about the collaboration with Alexa Chung – how did it come about?

Alexa is often cited as using Eyeko to create her signature look. When we met over coffee she was full of ideas and doodling them all over her napkin that Max suggested she work with us on Eyeko. It’s been organic and free flowing so far and we exchange ideas over email, usually in the middle of the night, and catch up in New York or London to talk Eyeko and world domination – ensuring everyone has our mascara and liner in their bag!

Who are your eye makeup icons?

Alexa and I share a lot of the same ‘60s girl crushes for our eye makeup icons, from Francoise Hardy to Anna Karina and, of course, everyone’s favourites Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot.

What does it mean to you to be a London-based brand?

I’m a Londoner so it’s home! I get to travel a lot but I still find London the most inspiring place as it’s such a melting pot for style, culture and architecture. We embrace our own eccentricities and delight in our differences, which is not an attitude you commonly find elsewhere in the world.

Do you think Londoners have any beauty signatures?

I think we give good cat eye! From the Amy Winehouse winged-out eye to Alexa Chung’s subtle cat eye, I would say that it’s definitely a signature look for Londoners!

What’s next for Eyeko?

We’re super excited to introduce our new launches including Eyeko Visual Eyes which is our most precise liquid eyeliner pen yet with a brush tip and waterproof formula it makes nailing the cat eye trend a doddle!
