Danny Jones is perhaps best known for being one-quarter of the multiplatinum British pop rock group McFly, but the Bolton-born artist has also established himself as one of today’s premiere songwriters and producers, collaborating with artists ranging from Busted to One Direction in addition to his extensive credits for his own group. His genre-bending sound shows the influence of a previous generation of musical luminaries, including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and The Who and contemporary pop rock artists, such as Coldplay, Kings of Leon, and The Killers. Beginning in 2017, Jones will serve as a coach to young artists as a judge on the inaugural season of The Voice Kids UK.
We caught up with him for the latest in our ‘My London’ interview series.
While I love London and everything it has to offer, I have to choose the neighbourhood where I grew up, Bromley Cross in Bolton. There’s no place like home!
Favourite place for brunch:
My wife Georgia and I like to go to Urban Pantry in Chiswick. It’s cozy which is comforting but still lively, which we love. Plus the food is some of the best.
Best coffee in London:
Hmmmmm…I’m not usually too picky about my coffee. I usually go with whatever is closest at the time that I need the caffeine in my system.
Favourite gallery or museum:
I’m addicted to the Tates; well the Tate Modern and Tate Britain. I am still trying to make my way to Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. I have the Soul of a Nation exhibit on my bucket list for Autumn.
Tell us a secret:
Well a big one, and it might not be so secret anymore, is that my wife is pregnant. Shhh! Don’t tell anyone!
Favourite place to shop:
Hands down I have to choose Westfield in Shepherd’s Bush. Nowhere else can I shop while getting my car wash and staying dry – it’s the trifecta!
Favourite place to find inspiration:
I live right by the river, so I have to choose the Thames. Walking by the river not only gives me inspiration but it also gives me true peace, which I think activates the inspiration. Some of my best song ideas have come walking along the river.
Best London destination for a date:
My wife and I like to go to spas whenever possible – then end the spa day with a really nice meal. But in general, the are are so many great date destinations to choose from in London – it’s such a great city!
Hands down, Kew Gardens! Have you seen The Hive?! I don’t know how anybody could choose anywhere else. It’s such a great park!
Favourite food market:
Hmmmmm…I’m going to have to go with Syon Park Food Festival. When that comes around, my glutenous ways unfortunately show their true head!
Your sanctuary in the city:
Well I just built a studio in my garden, so I’d have to choose that. It’s a time machine for me. To get in the mental state of peacefully waking up in my home and taking a few steps in my garden to my musical oasis – you really can’t beat it! I just mentally enter an entirely new galaxy and create nonstop.
What inspires you?
I get inspired by documentaries – I love watching them. Everything from Searching for Sugar Man to The Art of Organized Noize – Netflix, especially the documentary section, has become my best friend.
This season I’m loving:
The Temperature. Besides some brief extremely hot moments and some brief extremely rainy moments, overall, it’s been really nice. Such a pleasure to be able to wear shorts and t-shirts outside.
