You may be more used to seeing supermodel Naomi Campbell on the catwalk, or gracing the cover of any number of high fashion magazines, than on TV, but today we’re taking you back to a time when the British model made an appearance in a little-known US show called The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
In 1990, Campbell appeared in the tenth episode of the show’s first season, playing ‘Helen’ – a love interest for the house’s butler Geoffrey. Set up on a blind date by Will Smith’s character, the aptly named ‘Will’, the two instantly bond over their London roots and ineffable sophistication. However, Will steps in to try his luck with the gorgeous Helen, and of course, hilarity and outrageous dance moves ensue. Spoiler alert: things don’t work out for the couple and Geoffrey later passes Helen’s number onto Will.
However, Campbell’s cameo wasn’t her only triumph that year, as January marked the release of the now-iconic Vogue cover, featuring Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford by Naomi’s side.
In the same year, the London-born star was named “the reigning megamodel of them all” by Interview magazine, going on to star with her fellow fashionistas in George Michael’s Freedom! ’90 music video. While the 1990s was just beginning for most of us, it seems the young Campbell’s career was already more than flourishing. Sigh.
